This course covers sexual and reproductive health issues for both women and men. It consists of five theoretical modules of lectures and workshops, an assessment (short answer questions and supervised clinical assessment), followed by seven sessions of supervised clinical practice, (one being in men’s health), to be arranged at times suitable to the applicant and SHQ.

The SH&FPA Certificate in Sexual and Reproductive Health for Medical Practitioners is accredited for CME points by the RACGP and ACRRM. The course is held in high esteem and thought to be very practical in nature, giving participants the confidence and skills to work at a high level in this area. The course focuses on primary care aspects of sexual health, a core aspect of both general practice and specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology.

Those who might have a special interest in completing The SH&FPA Certificate in Sexual and Reproductive Health for Medical Practitioners are:

  • GP registrars (where the skills obtained in this course cover many of the objectives set out in the women’s and men’s health core curriculums)
  • GPs already in practice who do a lot of women’s health or STI work,
  • Rural GPs
  • Those who may wish to work in women’s health centres or family planning clinics.

This course is eligible for the Rural and Remote Procedural GP grants from the federal government. These grants provide up to $15,000 per GP per year, for up to two weeks of training.

Theory Course Content

  • Female and male reproductive physiology
  • Contraception: facilitating choices for women and men, with a particular emphasis on available contraceptive options..
  • The issues involved in managing unplanned pregnancy including medical, psychosocial, counselling and legal aspects
  • Diagnosis and management of Sexually Transmitted Infections
  • Cervical and breast screening
  • Menopause management
  • The management of couples with subfertility
  • Office gynaecology: menstrual problems, vulval-vaginal disorders
  • Men’s sexual health: office urology

The clinical practicum component is a minimum of seven clinical sessions. Participants must have current Registration with the Medical Board of Australia and SHQ requires that doctors obtain their own medical indemnity insurance.
