We usually require two appointments for an IUD (Intrauterine Device) insertion:

  • the first appointment is to go through your medical history, and provide an explanation about IUDs and what to expect during the insertion procedure.  We also do any pre-testing that is required, and organise a script for your IUD if needed.
  • the second appointment is when the insertion takes place. Please allow an hour for this appointment.
  • please phone us on 9227 6178 to discuss available appointment times

Medicare cardholders will be charged $15 out of pocket for the first appointment. If you require a consultation with a doctor, the appropriate Medicare Benefit Schedule fee will be applied in addition to the out of pocket fee. This additional cost is rebated to you by Medicare, leaving the out of pocket expense at $15.

Clients with a Government or health care concession card and clients under 25 years of age will be bulk billed for the first appointment.

Clients without a Medicare card will be charged $15 for the first appointment.

IUDs can be purchased from a pharmacy with a script (prices can vary, so it can be worth checking with your local discount chemist), or from SHQ at the following cost prices:

Copper IUD (usually easiest to purchase through SHQ) $100
Mirena no Medicare $235
Mirena with Medicare $40.30
Mirena for Health Care Card holders $6.50

IUD insertions (second appointment) are privately billed:

  • the insertion procedure itself can cost up to $195.20 (not including device cost). This includes a non-rebatable gap fee of $75.
  • if you have a Health Care Card, the procedure is bulk billed (no out of pocket expense) if you bring your own IUD. If you purchase the IUD from SHQ, you will pay the appropriate Medicare Benefit Schedule fees upfront as well as the cost of the IUD. Medicare will rebate to you the cost of the MBS fees, we will waive the $75 gap fee and you will only be out of pocket for the cost of the IUD.
  • If you don’t have Medicare, we will charge the $75 gap fee plus the cost of the device if purchased from SHQ. You may also need to pay privately for any pathology tests, which are usually bulk-billed for Medicare cardholders.
  • If you are experiencing financial difficulties, please discuss this confidentially with your clinician.

If you require pain management, please discuss options and costs with your clinician.
