SHQ leads the way in diversity

SHQ is leading the way in diversity, with staff member Lena Van Hale the first LGBTI+ winner of a part-scholarship to complete a Diploma of Governance with the Institute of Community Directors Australia.

“This is a fantastic achievement by Lena, and we congratulate them on their commitment to boosting access for, and inclusion of, LGBTI+ communities,” said Ms Debra Barnes, Chief Executive Officer.

“At SHQ, we take great pride in making sure our workplace is inclusive. Staff are hard at work preparing for Rainbow Tick accreditation later this year, which is a national accreditation program for organisations that are committed to safe and inclusive practice and service delivery for LGBTI+ people”.

Ms Barnes said the formation of a new LGBTI+ Reference Group at SHQ was another way the organisation was committed to ensuring inclusive practice.

“This group’s feedback has informed the development of several important documents, including our new Diversity Statement, and will help guide service delivery improvements moving forwards.”

“We are currently reviewing our policies and resources to ensure inclusive language, staff have undertaken diversity training, and all of our toilets are now gender neutral!” she said.

Ms Barnes said that in addition to acknowledging and celebrating diversity within its own organisation, SHQ also encouraged other organisations to do the same.

“We are pleased to be offering diversity training for organisations wanting to improve the quality of their service, and ensure an inclusive workplace,” she said.

“This new training aims to increase people’s knowledge of LGBTI+ diversity, and increase their confidence to work inclusively with LGBTI+ clients and colleagues.”

“We are strongly committed to making services more accessible, and safer, for members of the LGBTI+ community.”
