IUD Theory Training Face to Face

IUD workshops cover current information about copper and hormonal IUD’s insertion techniques and how to manage problems. They also include practice insertions (in pelvic models).

Interstate clinicians must receive approval to attend IUD training at SHQ from the Medical Educator. Interstate clinicians must email the Medical Educator to discuss if they are eligible to attend IUD training at SHQ.

Entry Requirements / Eligibility:

Participants must be registered with the Australian health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a medical practitioner or nurse practitioner, midwife or registered nurse.

To be eligible to do the supervised clinical attachment at SHQ you must have:

At least 12 months full time general practice or equivalent OR
At least 6 months gynaecology experience AND
You will be able to insert IUDs in your practice immediately after completing the supervised clinical attachment at SHQ, AND
You satisfactorily complete the IUD Clinic Application Form

It is expected that those who undertake insertions of IUDs in practice have excellent skills in:

helping patients to choose contraceptive methods
assessing whether patients are suitable to use IUDs
communication
pelvic examination

Midwifes and registered nurses considering IUD training

ensure that contraceptive IUDs insertion and/or removals are a recognised aspect of your scope of practice within your workplace
establish an agreement with one or more prescribing doctors about when you can insert or remove contraceptive IUDs
ensure you have appropriate indemnity coverage

All Nurses including Nurse Practitioners must contact the Nurse Educator to discuss eligibility prior to registering for IUD workshops. Do not register for an IUD theory workshop until you have received written approval to attend.

If you wish to undertake IUD training, but do not have the requisite skills, it is recommended to complete training in these prior to undertaking clinical IUD training. Some may wish to do the SHQ Foundations of Sexual and Reproductive Health or FPAA Reproductive and Sexual Health course, or some sections of it.

Supervised Clinical Attachment

Step 1: Theory Workshop

Complete an IUD workshop. IUD workshops cover current information about copper and hormonal IUD’s insertion techniques and how to manage problems. They also include practice insertions (in pelvic models).

It is usually held in the lecture theatre at SHQ, but if at least 5 GPs request a workshop elsewhere, this can often be arranged.

Step 2: Application for IUD Supervised Clinical Attachment

Application forms will be made available after attending the theory workshop, or by contacting Clinic Education Coordinator or the Medical Educator, Dr Alison Creagh.

The clinical component of IUD training is available to those who have completed the equivalent of 12 months of full time primary care, such as general practice, or 6 months full time equivalent work in a sexual health clinic or obstetric and gynaecological setting. Clinical training is limited to those who successfully complete an application form available after the theory workshop, and who will be able to commence IUD insertions in their own practice within a month of completing the clinical training.

If an applicant does not have the requisite skills, the Medical Educator may make suggestions for suitable further training prior to IUD clinical training.

Step 3: IUD Supervised Clinical Attachment

After approval for training, those new to IUD insertions book and pay for 3-4 supervised 3.5 hour IUD training clinics ($220 inc GST per session) located at SHQ in Northbridge. Sometimes, extra clinics are needed, depending on the patient mix.

An alternative to doing IUD clinics at SHQ is to book an SHQ preceptor to come to your own practice. Please contact us to discuss availability and cost of this option.

Another option if you have a skilled IUD inserter in your practice, is to request supervision and feedback from them for your first 7-10 IUD insertions. A certificate from SHQ would not be provided in this situation.

Assessment

During the clinics, trainees are expected to acquire competence in IUD discussions, IUD insertions and in managing IUD related problems. At least 5 competent insertions are needed, which usually means performing (with assistance) 7-10 insertions. If all competencies are met, then a certificate is provided.

Please see registration forms for cost of theory workshop. Supervised clinical attachment has an additional cost of $220 inc GST per clinical session. Payment for supervised clinical attachment is not required until all theory requirements have been met and clinical attachment dates have been negotiated.
