Progestogen only contraception in people aged 50 years and over
Injectable progestogen (Depo-provera) is not recommended in people aged 50 years and over. Other progestogen only methods, barriers or the copper intra-uterine device (IUD) can be used.
The levonorgestrel IUD, contraceptive implant and progestogen only pill can be stopped at the age of 55 years as the chances of a natural conception are extremely low. People aged 51-54 years who have been amenorrhoeic for at least 12 months and whose FSH is >30 IU/L on a single occasion can stop using the levonorgestrel IUD, contraceptive implant and progestogen only pill after a further 12 months.
If FSH is <30 IU/L, repeat in 12 months.
