Clients can self-refer for all appointment types at SHQ, however there are a few ways GPs can help clients access some appointments more efficiently.

Clinical Services

IUD Insertions

To assist clients to access IUD insertions, GPs are invited to participate in the process by discussing IUDs with clients prior to insertion of the device at SHQ.

Unintended Pregnancy/Abortion

SHQ operates the WA Statewide Abortion Care Helpline Service, 1800 4 Choice, which is funded by the WA Department of Health. 1800 4 Choice offers confidential and non-judgemental support and information to individuals and healthcare providers about abortion legislation and services.

The 1800 4 Choice service includes a phone line (1800 424 642) and webchat staffed by SHQ nurses, and an interactive map providing information on pregnancy options to support people to find abortion care providers across WA. The service is also available to clinicians with questions about abortion care and provides information about legal obligations for conscientious objectors under the new legislation (Abortion Legislation Reform Bill 2023).

SHQ also offers an Essentials of Medical Abortion in WA course for doctors, endorsed midwives and nurse practitioners to provide medical abortion care confidently and ethically in their practice. Details on the next course can be found here.

Medical appointments are available at SHQ to discuss pregnancy options and provide medical terminations of pregnancy (MTOP). There is no longer a requirement for patients to see two doctors to access an abortion in WA, so they can book directly via our reception or website. To assist clients to access a MTOP more quickly, GPs are invited to participate in the process by discussing the procedure with clients and arranging the necessary investigations (eg. blood tests, STI testing and ultrasound).

In addition to medical appointments for clients, SHQ also offers a free unplanned pregnancy and post-abortion counselling service.

Gender Affirming Service

SHQ has established a Gender Affirming Service to support the needs of our transgender, gender diverse and nonbinary community.

A referral is not required, and clients can book online or call (08) 9227 6178 to make an appointment. Under an ‘informed consent’ model of care, our primary health care practitioners perform an initial assessment and play a key role in the mental health and risk assessments of transgender and non-binary clients. They may organise referral for secondary consultation where required.
