This comprehensive eLearning package is designed to build understanding of intimate partner violence (IPV) and reproductive coercion and abuse (RCA), and develop participants’ ability to recognise, respond and refer people experiencing violence.
This self-paced course is designed for:
- Doctors
- Nurses and midwives
- Medical/nursing students
- Counsellors and psychologists
- Social workers
- Allied health professionals
- Clinic support staff
- Clinicians interested in supporting clients experiencing violence
The training consists of 6 online eLearning modules, each approximately 45 – 60 minutes in length.
Participants must complete the training within a 6-week period to avoid penalty.

The eLearning package was developed by clinicians in consultation with consumers and industry stakeholders.
The eLearning course was developed with funding from the Women’s Leadership and Development Program, Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.
Research evaluating course effectiveness was conducted in partnership with Curtin University.

Recognition / Accreditation:
This is an RACGP approved CPD activity under the RACGP CPD program.
Module 1: Overview of IPV and RCA
Aim: To increase awareness and understanding of IPV/RCA for people working in healthcare settings.
Outcome: Learner can discuss the prevalence and common myths and misconceptions of IPV and RCA.
Module 2: Why Healthcare settings?
Aim: To increase awareness and understanding of IPV/RCA as a health priority for people working in healthcare settings.
Outcome: Learner can discuss the health impacts of IPV and RCA and outline the role of health professionals in assisting people experiencing IPV/RCA.
Module 3: Recognising IPV and RCA
Aim: To increase health professionals’ knowledge and build skills in recognising signs of IPV and RCA.
Outcome: The learner recognises risk factors and can discuss barriers to identifying IPV and RCA. The learner can identify how to enquire if a patient has experienced IPV/RCA.
Module 4: Responding to IPV and RCA
Aim: To increase health professionals’ knowledge and build skills in responding to disclosures of IPV/RCA.
Outcome: The learner can appropriately respond to a disclosure of abuse and discuss important aspects of health care with a patient who has disclosed IPV/RCA.
The learner can outline important issues to discuss when helping a patient consider their safety.
Module 5: Referring to specialist services
Aim: To increase knowledge and build capacity in referring patients impacted by IPV/RCA to appropriate services.
Outcome: The learner can identify useful sources of information and discuss possible referral options for patients experiencing IPV/RCA.
Module 6: Self Care
Aim: To increase knowledge and understanding of the importance of self-care for people working with patients impacted by abuse.
Outcome: The learner can discuss the impacts on health professionals who assist patients experiencing abuse, reflect on the impact on themselves when caring for patients in distress, and identify options for self-care when caring for patients in distress.
