Gender Affirming Health Service

Individualised, person centred care for trans, gender diverse and non-binary people.

Our gender affirming health service is staffed by doctors, nurses and counsellors with experience providing inclusive, high-quality, and culturally competent healthcare services that address the unique needs of transgender and gender-diverse individuals while fostering a welcoming and supportive environment within our clinic.

SHQ follows the informed consent model, recognising that trans, gender-diverse and non-binary people are the experts of their own experiences. This approach respects and upholds their right to make autonomous decisions about their bodies and healthcare.

Services we provide

In addition to the above services, clients over 18 can also access feminising and masculinising hormone treatment and monitoring.

Frequently asked questions

The SHQ Gender Affirming service is open to people of all ages; however, gender-affirming hormone therapy is only available to individuals aged 18 and over.

For clients under 18 seeking hormone therapy, we can provide referrals to the Perth Children’s Hospital Gender Diversity service.

Individuals can also consult their GP for guidance, ongoing care and referral options.

Gender-affirming care refers to a range of health care and support services that respect and affirm a person’s gender identity. It is based on the fundamental right to access healthcare without discrimination, prejudice, or unnecessary barriers, ensuring support for an individual’s mental, physical and emotional well-being.

This care can include social, psychological, behavioural or medical interventions tailored to an individual’s needs and goals. Gender affirming healthcare centres trans, gender diverse and non-binary people, offering personalised support for their affirmation journey. This may include medical options such as hormone therapy, puberty suppression and surgical interventions, as well as support for non-medical aspects, such as social transition and publicly affirming one’s gender.

We do not provide surgical affirmation services, but we can offer referrals and assist you in finding a suitable provider.

We do not provide puberty suppression treatments as gender-affirming hormonal therapy is not currently available at SHQ to people under 18 years of age.

Gender affirming voice and communication training is available at SHQ.

Discover and explore voice and communication techniques that support you to express yourself confidently and authentically, aligned with your identity.

What we can offer:

  • Professional guidance in voice care and maintenance
  • Understanding of voice characteristics (e.g., pitch, resonance, intonation)
  • Safe and supportive practice techniques
  • An affirming space to learn and practice
  • Neurodiversity affirming approaches
  • Consideration of external variables that affect your communication
  • Non-verbal, body language & presentation skills

SHQ strives to create an inclusive environment for clients, workers and visitors who come to SHQ. All staff receive training on LGBTIQA+ diversity and inclusion to ensure they have the knowledge and skills to support the range of people who engage with us. Read our Diversity Statement.

We also hold Rainbow Tick Accreditation.

No referral is needed. You can book online or call 08 9227 6178 to make an appointment.

Clients are welcome to bring a support person. We require clients to complete their intake forms in a private area for their own safety and wellbeing. In some cases, the clinicians need to see clients on their own, this may be for part of the consultation or the whole consultation depending on the situation. Your support person is free to sit in our waiting area during this time.

Legal affirmation refers to updating your legal documents – passport, licence, birth certificate, – to reflect your gender.

All document changes have separate processes with different requirements.

Legal Aid WA has developed a comprehensive fact sheet on legal rights and processes around gender identity and affirmation.

You can also visit the Attorney-General’s Department website for more information.
